Board Member Spotlight: Sam Rivers

Meet Sam Rivers, Vice President of the ASSP Sacramento Chapter and former Chapter Secretary.

Sam has spent the last 14 years working across safety, health, environmental, and sustainability roles and has been an active member of the Sacramento ASSP Chapter for the past three years.

What inspired her to pursue a career in safety?
Safety wasn’t originally part of Sam’s career plan. She studied Environmental Science with plans to work as a lobbyist for an environmental nonprofit, but instead began her career in environmental consulting. As clients began having emerging health and safety needs, Sam stepped in to help, beginning a career that has continued to move between safety, health, and environmental responsibilities.

What does she enjoy most about ASSP?
For Sam, it’s the opportunity to give back to the safety community through leadership and volunteering. She values being able to share her knowledge and experiences with others while continuing to learn from the experiences of fellow safety professionals.

What is she especially proud of?
Sam is proud of balancing parenthood with a meaningful career where she can make a positive difference. With her second child arriving soon, growing her family is an especially meaningful accomplishment.

Outside of safety:
Sam enjoys playing kickball with local Sacramento leagues, staying active, and spending time with friends.

Fun fact:
Before beginning her career in SHE&S, Sam played professional softball for a team in Chicago!

Her best piece of safety advice:

“Ask the people who do the job what the safest way to do it is.”

Sam’s advice reflects the value of learning directly from the people doing the work and incorporating their experience into safety solutions.

Her personal motto:
Sam draws inspiration from the meanings behind her tattoos, including reminders to be playful, be powerful, rise up, be fierce, grow in community, and never stop looking up.

We’re excited to have Sam’s experience, enthusiasm, and commitment to giving back as part of the Sacramento ASSP Chapter leadership team.
