NFPA 70B and You: What the Standard Means to the Typical Workplace, presented by Lee F. Donahue, SMS, CHST, CUSP, OHST

NFPA 70B on Electrical Equipment Maintenance recently changed from a Recommended Practice to a Standard.  This works in conjunction with NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code, and NFPA 70E, the Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, to enhance electrical safety and reliability in installed systems.  This presentation gives a brief overview of the history behind the three documents.  It explains to the beginner the significance of these documents and the role 70B plays in protecting people and systems.  Without getting too technical, it illustrates the necessary changes to be in compliance with 70B and how to implement this in a facility.  It also estimates the predicted impact to future operations based on the change to Standard status.

Lee Donahue is currently the Sr. Safety Manager at Morrow-Meadows Corporation, an electrical contractor operating primarily on the West Coast with outlying projects throughout the country.  He oversees the safety aspect of construction activity in San Diego, Riverside, Sacramento, and Imperial countries, as well as specific projects in Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and other upcoming work in additional states.

Lee has worked as an electrician in California and Illinois and as such needed to comply with NFPA 70, 70B, and 70E.  He has also worked in the construction roles of estimator, project manager, and service manager, and has incorporated these NFPA documents into those responsibilities.  As an outside consultant, he worked with both construction and occupational clients to ensure their safe compliance with these documents, specializing in analysis of both electrical and safety systems.  As an instructor he has trained on safety practices, power quality, and especially live electrical work practices.”
